Leading What’s Next…
As we come to the end of another calendar year, it’s great to reflect on all that has been accomplished. We’ve made new strides in connecting business with education to develop skilled trades talent, and the state has been a great partner in investing in apprenticeship and training programs. Our unemployment rate is near a 20-year low, and several out-of-state companies have announced significant investments here within just the past few months.
However, there is a major education accountability issue that has gone unaddressed and we are still working hard to enact within the remaining weeks of 2018.
Think of report card time. You open the envelope – or perhaps the email – and see a ‘B’. You have a clear picture of how your child is performing in class.
Unfortunately for parents and students, Michigan is not nearly as clear about the quality of education in our schools. Lacking school accountability has been a problem in Michigan for years. We’ve moved from one confusing system of rating schools to another, never actually giving parents the information that they need to know in order to make critical decisions about their child’s education choices.
BLM advocates for education policies that are simple, fair and transparent. An A-F grading system for schools checks all 3 boxes, and polling shows that parents support it over other school rating systems. It’s time to get it done.
